About MYP

The Male Youth Project (MYP) Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Gerard O.

Bingham, who served as the Project’s executive director for over 30 years. The scholarship was

developed to continue Mr. Bingham’s legacy and the mission of the program. The program

assisted at-risk male youth with their transition from childhood to manhood through numerous

programs and activities such as health and well-being, education (including college prep),

community service, parental involvement and mentoring. Mr. Bingham’s goal was to

unconditionally assist male youth and some females to become productive adults. The MYP

originated at Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, DC, and expanded to many other locations

throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia.

MYP Mission

The Male Youth Project Scholarship Fund has a two-prong mission: 1) to provide mentoring to

encourage youth to reach their full potential in high school and in preparation for higher

education; 2) to provide scholarships and financial assistance to youth pursuing higher education

or specific trade skills.

MYP Vision

Known affectionately as “Mr. B,” Gerard Bingham inspired through his length of service as

executive director a deep personal devotion to the MYP. To know Mr. B was to know that he

was passionate about the MYP and stopped at nothing to ensure the program’s operation. For the last 15 of the program’s 30+ years, Mr. B sacrificed personal funds and donations to keep the program afloat and his vision active. He envisioned for the participants a world where they are successful and through their success, they pay it forward. This was Mr. B’s take-home message to the youth on a regular basis: “If you want to pay me back, continue to pay it forward and help someone else.” Mr. B’s message and vision are realized through former participants who now serve as mentors to at-risk youth. His death and love for youth inspired his family and friends to create the MYP Scholarship Fund, a lasting memorial to honor him and to help students.
